For pretty much the past 20 years we've lived in
Bletchingley, we've had at least one House Martins nest under the eaves on the North side of this house. Their almost continual
chattering, comings & goings have kept me in touch with the life away from my keyboard & screen.
This year they didn't return. A look around the rest of the village showed very few nests, though the Swallows seem to be holding their own. This started me wondering what else is becoming scarce. The hedgehogs I used to see at dusk snuffling round the garden after slugs aren't there any more. There are fewer bees & butterflies. Even in a fairly rural village like this, there seems to be a sudden and rapid loss of species.
We really have to try so much harder to make up for the dismal impact we're having on the world and fast. I'm fairly comfortable that I'm doing my bit to slow the decline, but I'm going to have to be more of an evangelist.
